Established in a small unused orchard shed, Kim Lyons Pottery
has over the years developed into a distinctive and well established West
Australian manufacturer of hand thrown terracotta.
Continuing improvements to facilities and production equipment has enabled the
original 'oil rag' enterprise to grow and expand on its merits. The pottery has
remained located on the original site, however the leaky old shed has long gone.
Kim Lyons Pottery is produced using our own clay body derived from ancient clay
beds in Western Australia. The clay is processed at the Pottery to create a clay
which is suitable for throwing both small and large pieces.
Traditional hand throwing skills are used to shape each item and the decoration
is applied by hand using slip and oxides to give the colors.
After drying, the pottery is set in a gas fired kiln where it is fired to 1100°C
to ensure it's durability. The temperature and the time spent in the firing make
Kim Lyons pottery extremely resistant to fretting from dissolved salts and
frosts – a common problem in much lower fired terracotta.
